Rosie and I have been working hard on a few landscaping projects around our home. The two major projects were to redo the front hill by our garage and to place rocks on the areas along our long driveway. Here are a few before and after photos of our work.
Below is the front hill before our work. The shadows make it a little tough to see but you will note it needed some new plants and "beauty bark".

Here it is after our project was completed.
One more "after" shot.
For those of you who don't believe I do manual labor, take a look at that pile of rocks. I shoveled and hauled countless wheelbarrows to put the rocks along the sides of the lower driveway. I guess we could have rented a little tractor but given that the manual labor was "free" we quickly dismissed that idea. The project helped me find a few muscles I did not know I had. That work along with my daily push ups routine has prompted a number of people to ask me if I am taking steroids.

Here is what it looked like before the project. Note the sides of the driveway are full of weeds and look a mess.
Here is the after shot (Sammy loves to be in pictures).
One more after shot of the driveway down to the road -- a much needed improvement.
One other project involved cutting and hauling a number of trees and branches in back of the house into a big burn pile. It has been a very wet spring and many of the branches were still on the green side so I was not confident we would get a fire started. But Andrew, Sammy (he was very helpful as he kept pushing his tennis ball into the fire so we would play catch with him. Rosie and I have often said he is the perfect dog for the Johnsons as he has some serious OCD issues) and I got a roaring bonfire out of that pile (without any accelerants like gasoline). Like all males we thought it was great fun to have a giant fire that close to the house.
Two thoughts kept running through my mind as I did this work:
- Where are Steve, Marc and Paul when I need them?
- Maybe I will have to go back to work -- just kidding, I love this new phase of my life (except for the rock hauling) and spending this time with Rosie has been wonderful.

What about the girls? We work hard in the yard - I'm stronger than Stephen, Paul and Marc, no offense.
No, but seriously, the yard looks really incredible - that terraced front hill and the sides of the driveway, bravo!
The steroid comment was the funniest.
It looks beautiful Dad. I think there's something really satisfying about outside physical work.
Very, very nice job. All of you. Way to get some excercise AND be useful at the same time Uncle Brad.
I can't wait until you come to Utah again so I can see your guns!
