Cabin Update

This afternoon Rosie and I met with Paul, Jill, Lee and Jeannie at the cabin to review the progress, make final decisions on finishes and discuss the cabin governance. Marc came up from Provo and joined us for most of the discussions (He also caught a marvelous lunch that Rob prepared for everyone -- well worth the 120 mile drive).

Rosie, Andrew, Rebekah and I had hoped to spend Monday and Tuesday painting at the cabin but the drywall is not quite ready for paint. As you can see from the attached pictures we are making progress. It is a little slower than we had hoped, in large part because of the weather, but we expect to have it completed by mid June. We are going to have a big work party there on the Saturday before Memorial Day in May and would love to have any willing hands in the area help.

Each time I go up Logan Canyon I get more excited about this beatutiful gathering place that will undoubtedly provide great moments and memories in the years to come. I'm anxious to show each of you our new refuge in the mountains.
This will also be a perfect place to enjoy all our outdoor passions. The trail head for two superb hikes is a half mile down the road and the canyon is full of great hiking including the beauties of the Tony Grove area. The road biking is outstanding as one can ride to Tony Grove or to Bear Lake and get a great workout. The river trail will be ideal for cross country skiing and the opportunities in the canyon for snowshoeing are endless. The cabin is 45 minutes from Bear Lake and Lee said we can borrow his boat whenever we want to go water skiing. Beaver Mountain and its excellent skiing is less than 30 minutes away and there are a myriad of mountain biking possibities.

The three Partners -- Brad, Paul & Lee in front of the cabin. We decided to finish the outside in various gray colors to blend in with the beautiful rock cliffs directly behind the cabin. Marc was a big help in coming to that decision. However, the exterior is the last part of the project that will be completed.

Jill is standing in the doorway of the main entrance. Rosie and I are in the Living Room. It is going to be gorgeous when completed. One of the best architectuaral features is the many windows throughout the house. It is flooded with natural light and during the day one will not even have to turn on a light.
This was taken from the Living Room looking at the Kitchen where Paul and Jill are standing and the dining area where Marc is standing.

Taken from the entry door looking to the living and dining area.
Paul is standing on the loft in the second floor.

Marc on the scaffolding he used to stain the window frames -- he is a big help on this project.

Let me know what you think.

Andrew's Vivaldi Piece

Two weeks ago Andrew participated in the State solo ensemble competition. He played the attached piece and got a "One" rating which is the highest they give. His accompanist did a great job as well. What do you think?

A Day in the Life of the Searcys

First we ate breakfast. John held Joyce. Notice her crossed feet. This is her go to thing to do with her feet. Bored in the carseat? Why not try crossing your legs - one over the other, again and again. Thinking about what to eat for breakfast? Crossing your legs helps.

After that, John went off to work in his scary warehouse (the school district moved him there while they are refinishing the old location near the high school). Joyce and I hung out - I made some meals to bring over to a family who just had a baby. Before we left to drop them off, we ate some lunch together (lentil soup and a cooked red cabbage/apple dish - Joyce really loved this one - for reals). Joyce sat next to me in a big chair.

After running some errands, we picked up John so that we could take advantage of the beautiful, warm spring day by hiking in McCormick's Creek State Park. We used the amazing high tech backpack we received as a gift from Dad before his retirement. As you can see she has the potential to use this for years to come. Her head barely reaches over it.

But that doesn't stop her from enjoying it.

We took a hike through the woods, down into some wetlands and alongside the White River. John thought this would be a great place to go canoeing and wondered if there would be places to camp along the river.

The trail took us back up a ridge and then down again until we got to the Creek. Joyce found something she couldn't take her eyes off.

This:

She had to touch it and wanted to splash and play in the pretty frigid water. We'll have to come back in the summer so we can just let her have her way with the water.

I carried her the rest of the way back up a staircase that took us out of the gorge.

The annual Mayhew show went up at BYU this week, and I won Juror's Choice for these cylinders. Hopefully this means money. They're fired with layers of chemicals burning around them, so they look like layers of sediment, or perhaps an abstract landscape painting. The end

Joyce Feeds Herself

Joyce is working on feeding herself.

It's a tactile project - with many senses involved. There's a lot of missing of the mouth, and then moving in with the hands to assist.

But it's definitely a triumph experience for everyone involved, especially Joyce:
